If you wish to add a priming tool to your gunsmith tool kit, we will advise you to go for this gadget because it is cheap, durable and ideal for both left-handed and right-handed users.

It is made of tough polyester materials which makes it quite sturdy and useful for cutting tough objects.

The only downside to using this primer as with all primers is that your thumb may become sore after prolonged use, but this can be minimized by wearing work hand gloves.

The first time I used them, I loved the way they felt on the hands, and their ergonomic design is worthy of commendation.

Wiha screw and micro drivers are easy to use, and you can adjust the setting scale by 2-inch pound increment to suit the screws you are working on.

It is also important to note that regular inch-pound adjustments are required if you are working on hardware with different screw inch sizes.

Best Gunsmithing Tool Kit Reviews:

Weaver 849719 Deluxe Gunsmith Tool Kit

To start off this article looking for the best gunsmithing tool kit, we are going to be reviewing the Weaver 849719 Deluxe Gunsmith Tool Kit. This is from a very well-known brand (as evidenced by the fact that we are going to be reviewing more than one Weaver tool kit on this list) and so the expectations for it are quite high.

Overall, this is a pretty decent tool kit and we are sure that it will appeal to many of you out there.

This is a fairly big kit (although there are certainly bigger gunsmithing kits out there), coming in at 88 pieces. Included in that 88 pieces is various different bits and pieces that you need for light to medium gunsmithing. The main piece, as with any gunsmithing kit, is the hammer.

The hammer in the Weaver 849719 Deluxe Gunsmith Tool Kit is made using two different materials, brass and plastic. So, it is a fairly versatile tool that works well for a variety of different gunsmithing jobs.

Of course, it also comes with the essential gunsmithing screwdriver and a variety of different bits. Just from pictures alone, you might think that there are more bits than there really are. A lot of the bits are actually duplicates, which is nice, but it is also a bit confusing.

Next up, there are the punches. The weaver comes with eight steel punches (all of different sizes) and one extra brass punch, for a bit of variety. Finally, there is the bench block. There isn’t much to say about it. The bench block included in the Weaver does everything that you want a bench block to do, so we don’t have any complaints on that front.

In general, the kit is fairly well-balanced. At 88 pieces, the Weaver 849719 Deluxe Gunsmith Tool Kit is still a fairly well-balanced kit and most of you out there should get some good use out of it.

The kit is contained in a very good case. There isn’t anything particularly fancy about it mind you, but it is just a solid, durable, easy to use plastic case. There isn’t anything else that you could ask for in that department.

This isn’t a flawless kit by any means. For example, the hammer could be a bit better. As it is, the faces on the hammers come off very easily. This is intended to be a good thing, as it allows you to easily replace the faces on the hammer after they wear out. However, they come off way too easily. Also, the bits could afford to be a bit better as well, they are a bit too brittle as is.

Pros
  • Comes with nine punches (eight steel and one brass).
  • Good, solid plastic case for easy transport.
  • Fairly comprehensive kit that is good for a wide array of applications.
  • 88 pieces in the kit.
Cons
  • Bits need improvement.
  • Hammer faces come off too easily.

Weaver Compact Gunsmith Tool Kit

It may seem odd to immediately review yet another gunsmithing tool kit from Weaver, but the Weaver Compact Gunsmith Tool Kit has some unique features that make it deserving of a separate review on our best gunsmithing tool kit article. Overall, this is a decent little gunsmithing kit that is great for those who want something portable and that is good for light gunsmithing.

As the use of the word “compact” in the title indicates, this Weaver gunsmithing kit is not a particularly big kit. It is certainly a lot smaller than the 88-piece kit that we just finished reviewing. The main tool included in this kit is a gunsmithing screwdriver. This is already a big change from the last Weaver gunsmithing kit that we reviewed, which had both a hammer and a screwdriver.

Alongside the screwdriver, you also get a variety of different bits and three punches. All-in-all, you get 36 different pieces in the kit. As we said in the introduction, this is good for portable gunsmithing or for light gunsmithing at home. The Weaver Compact Gunsmith Tool Kit is also good if you already own a lot of gunsmithing equipment and just want something to complement what you already own.

Although there aren’t many components in the kit, what is in there works fairly well. The screwdriver and the bits are well-made, and they do what you would expect them to do. The punches also work very well.

Much like the previous Weaver gunsmithing kit, the Weaver Compact Gunsmith Tool Kit comes in a very solid plastic case. This is useful for transporting and for keeping everything in order.

Pros
  • Cheap.
  • Components are made well.
  • Easy to take on the go.
  • Works well for light gunsmithing or basic upkeep.
Cons
  • Doesn’t work especially well on its own.

Wheeler Engineering Hammer and Punch Set

Next up on our search for the best gunsmithing tool kit, we have the Wheeler Engineering Hammer and Punch Set. Now, this kit has a lot more in common with the last kit that we reviewed in the sense that it isn’t extremely big. However, it is still a pretty good gunsmithing kit overall and it is perfect for those who want a small kit for some basic gunsmithing.

Even though this is a best gunsmithing kit list, the Wheeler is, as the name of the product says, more of a hammer and punch kit. It doesn’t come with a screwdriver or any bits, like some of the other entries on this list do.

So, why include it at all? Well, the Wheeler is still a very good option for some very basic gunsmithing and gun maintenance. Likewise, the components that are included in the kit are very well-made.

Inside the kit is a very high-quality hammer. The hammer has two sides; one is made from nylon and the other is made from brass. This is great because it lets you be a bit more versatile when working. The brass side has more power, while the nylon side is better for more delicate jobs where you need to avoid causing scratches. The hammer itself is very well-made.

Accompanying the hammer is a bunch of very useful punches. This includes four steel ones, two plastic ones, and eight brass ones (for a total of fourteen). Much like with the hammer, the use of different materials for the punches gives the kit some much-needed versatility.

All these tools are contained in a helpful plastic carrying case. It is small, compact, and very easy to carry. It is a much better option than some of the non-solid carrying cases that other small tool kits use.

Obviously, the main issue with this kit is the lack of items. If you are looking for a serious gunsmithing kit, then this probably isn’t the right option for you unless you plan on buying another kit to supplement the items in this one.

Pros
  • Good carrying case.
  • Well-designed hammer and punches.
  • Hammer has two sides (brass and nylon).
  • Fourteen different punches.
  • Not very pricey.
Cons
  • Lack of items.

Pachmayr 03085 Master Gunsmith Ultimate Gunsmith Tool Set

Next up on our list looking for the best gunsmithing tool kit, we have the Pachmayr 03085 Master Gunsmith Ultimate Gunsmith Tool Set. This is a high-quality gunsmithing kit that has a good selection of tools and that also has a unique approach that we will discuss in a bit.

So, as with any review on this list, the first thing that we need to discuss is what exactly is in the kit. The Pachmayr 03085 Master Gunsmith Ultimate Gunsmith Tool Set is a fairly comprehensive kit. It contains a two-sided hammer (one side is nylon and the other is brass), eleven punches (ten steel and one brass), and eight screwdrivers.

One question that you may have is “where are the bits?” This is what makes the Pachmayr so unique. Unlike other entries on our best gunsmithing tool kit list, the Pachmayr doesn’t include bits for the screwdriver; instead, each screwdriver has a fixed blade. That makes this kit different from something like the Weaver 849719 Deluxe Gunsmith Tool Kit.

As you might expect from a kit that is being reviewed on the best gunsmithing tool kit list, the tools in the kit are simply great. Each one is really well-made and works like a charm. It doesn’t matter whether you are using the punches, the hammer, or the screwdriver, each of the tools do exactly what you need them to.

Each kit comes packed in a pretty standard plastic case. The case quality is somewhat disappointing. Parts of the case seem oddly brittle and can break easily. It would have been nice if the case offered more protection for the tools. However, if you don’t plan on going anywhere with the case, it isn’t a big deal.

One other issue that needs to be mentioned is the price. Given the size of this kit, the price is a bit high. To illustrate this, consider that there are bigger gunsmithing kits on this best gunsmithing tool kit list that actually cost less than this one.

Pros
  • Great tool quality.
  • Comes with hammer, screwdriver, and punches.
  • Hammer is two-sided.
  • Has different kinds of punches.
Cons
  • Fairly pricey given the size.
  • Case is brittle and can break easily.

Birchwood Casey Weekender Professional Gunsmith Kit 27 Tools

For this last review on our best gunsmithing tool kit list, we want to take a look at the Birchwood Casey Weekender Professional Gunsmith Kit 27 Tools. This is a fairly good, all-around gunsmithing kit that is sure to appeal to a wide variety of gun enthusiasts, regardless of experience level.

This is a 27-piece gunsmithing kit. Included inside, is the ever-important hammer (it has two sides, each with a different material), a variety of different punches, and of course, a bunch of different bits. The only thing missing is the screwdriver. As it is, this is a pretty good and comprehensive gunsmithing kit, but a nice screwdriver would have made it complete.

All the tools work very well and no matter what kind of guns you have, you will find these tools useful. The kit is good for everything from basic upkeep to full-on modification work. If you want to add scopes, sights, etc., then you can’t go wrong with the Birchwood Casey.

There are a few issues with this kit that hold us back from declaring it the best gunsmithing tool kit around. We already mentioned earlier how we would have liked for a screwdriver to be included, so we won’t mention that again. Another issue is the fact that the case it comes in is flimsy and just poorly designed overall. We would definitely recommend buying a separate case ASAP.

Pros
  • Good all-around gunsmithing case.
  • Budget-friendly.
  • Contains most of the tools a dedicated gunsmith needs.
  • Tools are well-made and work well.
Cons
  • Missing screwdriver.
  • Case could be better.

Gunsmithing Tool Kit Buying Guide

Best Gunsmithing Tool Kit

Most gun owners out there probably have a pretty good idea of what to look for when buying a gunsmithing kit. However, that isn’t going to be the case for everyone. Some of you browsing through our best gunsmithing tool kit list may be curious as to why we selected some of the kits that we did. You may be looking into purchasing a kit as a gift for someone else or you may be new to gunsmithing.

If you fall into one of these categories, this second part of the article is for you. In this buying guide, we are going to explain how you can go about picking out a good gunsmithing tool kit on your own.

Know What Sort Of Gunsmithing The Kit Is For

One of the main things that you probably picked up from our best gunsmithing tool kit list is how different the kits can end up being. Some kits, like the Weaver 849719 Deluxe Gunsmith Tool Kit, have a ton of items in them and can tackle basically any job under the sun. Some other kits have only a few items in them and are thus better for basic maintenance and upkeep.

What kit is best for you depends largely on what you plan on doing with it. If you are new to guns, then a smaller kit for basic gun upkeep is probably a better use of your money. On the other hand, if you are buying a kit for someone who is very experienced with guns or if you yourself are very experienced with them, then a larger, more expensive kit is likely going to be the better option.

The Most Important Tools

When shopping for the best gunsmithing kit, there are certain tools that you really need to keep an eye out for. These are the most important tools for keeping your guns in working order, which is why it is so important for any kit to contain them.

Hammer

Probably the most important tool is the hammer. When gunsmithing, hammers are essential for getting stubborn pins into place or for getting them out of the gun. You also want to make sure that the hammer is double sided, since this makes the tool more versatile (have a softer material on one side can reduce scratches).

Screwdriver

Regular screwdrivers can easily ruin the interior of your gun (this is a common mistake that amateurs make). So, any kit that you buy should ideally contain a gunsmithing screwdriver. If it doesn’t, make sure to at least buy one on your own.

Bench Block

Another important tool is the bench block. This is what you use to hold your guns steady and to catch any pins that come out of your gun (this is what the little holes on the bench block are for). Again, if you find a good kit without one, then make sure to buy one separately.

Punches

Finally, there are punches. These items are, as you might have guessed, meant for moving small internal components inside the gun. Usually, they are used for moving pins that you would otherwise struggle to read. Punches come in different shapes, so you want to have quite a few of them in any kit to make sure that you have the right size for the job.
